Anthropic just made Claude Code more expensive for developers who rely on it alongside OpenClaw and other third-party tools. Subscribers who previously had third-party integration access bundled into their plan will now need to pay separately to keep those connections working.
The change is straightforward in what it does and less clear in what it signals. Claude Code already sits at the premium end of AI coding assistant pricing. Stacking an additional charge on top of that for third-party tool support pushes the total cost higher - which matters most to freelancers and small teams without enterprise-level budgets.
The broader pattern here is familiar. Software platforms typically start with permissive integration policies to grow their user base, then treat those integrations as a monetization surface once users are dependent on them. That isn't unique to Anthropic - it's a standard move. But developers who've built workflows around Claude Code plus OpenClaw are now looking at a different cost equation than the one they signed up for.
